Food labelling is a nutritional minefield.

As part of its Food and Health Strategy, Heart of Mersey (HoM) has identified as a matter of priority, clearer, simpler labelling to highlight the fat and salt contents of all foods.

HoM supports the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) 'Traffic Lights' labelling system and recommends the Agency's list of useful tips which will help you to calculate whether or not a product is healthy enough.  You'll find more on food labellling at www.food.gov.uk

At a glance here are the FSA guidelines:

A little saturated fat: 1g or less per 100g or portion

A lot of saturated fat: 5g or more per 100g or portion

A little fat: 3g or less per 100g or portion

A lot of fat: 20g or more per 100g or portion

A little sugar: 2g or less of sugar per 100g or portion

A lot of sugar: 10g or more of sugar per 100g or portion

A little salt: 0.3g or less of salt per 100g or portion

A lot of salt: 1.3g or more of salt per 100g or portion

A little sodium: 0.1g or less of sodium per 100g or portion

A lot of sodium:  0.5g or more of sodium per 100g or portion

Please note that on some labels sodium is listed instead of salt.
